SPECTACULAR URBAN OPENING CEREMONY AT YOG BUENOS AIRES 2018
It was a special party. Different to all. More than 200 thousand people, according to the organization, gathered around the city’s maximum icon, the Obelisk, for an Urban Inaugural Ceremony.
For the first time in history, an event of this nature came from the big stadiums, to settle in the great avenues of a city as big and full of life as Buenos Aires is.
Different also, because unlike other overtures, here only the flag bearer paraded, the rest of the delegation under the stage enjoyed the show. For many, positive for the time gained, for others, negative because the essence of these ceremonies is lost.
The show was first quality, with a surprising staging that had the obelisk as a fundamental part of the set. Colors, lights, futurism, artists flying through the air and competing from the bottom up of the great Buenos Aires monument, surprised all the attendees.
The most important moment was, of course, the lighting of the torch. Prominent Argentine athletes took the Olympic fire close to the stage and two Argentine idols had the honor of lighting the cauldron: Paula Pareto, Olympic Judo Champion, and Santiago Lange, sailor, Olympic and world champion.
After the speeches of the president of the Organizing Corporation and IOC Member, Gerardo Werthein, and the IOC President, Thomas Bach, came the official words of the President of the Republic of Argentina, Mauricio Macri, to officially inaugurated the III Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018.
After that, the traditional fireworks began behind the obelisk, transforming the traditional July 9 Avenue of the Argentine capital into a true postcard, rarely seen in this way.
