With a new “Silver” category from World Athletics and for the first time at the Olympic Stadium in Santo Domingo, the 6th edition of the Félix Sánchez Track and Field Classic will take place. This major event will feature top international athletes competing and will be broadcast live worldwide on the Panam Sports Channel.
This Saturday, August 22, starting at 6 p.m. local time, Santo Domingo will host a new Félix Sánchez Classic, the most important track and field event in the Dominican Republic.
In this 2026 edition, the competition brings two new developments.
The first is that World Athletics has awarded it “Continental Tour Silver” status. This means that, starting this year, the event will award points toward the world rankings, and the results achieved may qualify athletes for the Pan American Games, World Championships, or the Olympic Games.
The second major piece of news is the change of venue. On Saturday, the event will take place at the renovated Félix Sánchez Olympic Stadium, which features a new track and field facility inaugurated for the recent Central American and Caribbean Games a few weeks ago.
“We are very excited and motivated about this new edition of the Classic. We have made significant efforts to attract outstanding world-class and continental-level athletes. Furthermore, having World Athletics ‘Silver’ status and hosting the event at the Olympic Stadium is a major step forward for our competition,” said Félix Sánchez, a two-time gold medalist and organizer of this competition.
In total, more than 100 athletes from 18 countries will participate in this athletic celebration. We will see athletes from Jamaica, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Colombia, the United States, the Cayman Islands, Barbados, Brazil, Dominica, Costa Rica, Trinidad and Tobago, Canada, Nigeria, Mexico, Zimbabwe, Panama, and Bahrain.
Among the standout athletes set to compete in this Classic are Ronal Longa of Colombia, the Pan American and Central American and Caribbean Games champion in the 100-meter dash; Puerto Rico’s star sprinters, Eloy Benitez and Gladymar Torres; from the United States, Chris Robinson, Salif Mane, and James Smith; and from the Dominican Republic, big names such as the current No. 1 in the 100-meter dash, Liranyi Alonso, and the experienced Lugelin Santos.
