ASUNCIÓN OR RIO NITERÓI: THE CONTINENT CHOOSES THE HOST FOR THE 2031 PAN AMERICAN GAMES

Next Friday, October 10, at the Panam Sports Extraordinary General Assembly, the host city for the 2031 Pan American Games will be elected. A total of 53 votes will be cast, and the city that obtains an absolute majority will win the right to organize the Games.

Panam Sports Channel will broadcast the event live.

Everything is ready for the Americas to choose the host city of the XXI Pan American Games in history. Starting today, Tuesday, members of the Pan American family who will participate in the Extraordinary General Assembly, scheduled for Friday, October 10, at 10:00 a.m. (local time), will begin arriving in Santiago, Chile.

There are two candidate cities, Asunción, Paraguay, and Rio-Niterói, Brazil, which met all the requirements set by Panam Sports and welcomed the Evaluation Commission a few days ago.

After hosting the Junior Pan American Games this year in Asunción, Paraguay will seek to be elected for the first time to host the continental senior event.

In addition to the Pan American Village, its proposal includes the construction of an athletics stadium and a new arena in Asunción’s Olympic Park, as well as the venues already used in last August’s junior event.

If selected, Brazil would be hosting the Games for the third time, after São Paulo in 1963 and Rio de Janeiro in 2007.

Rio-Niterói plans to use all the facilities that are a legacy from the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, in addition to building some sports venues in Niterói and the Pan American Village in the heart of Rio de Janeiro.

HOW WILL THE VOTE WORK?

The Extraordinary General Assembly in Santiago, Chile, will include a presentation by the Evaluation Commission, which visited both cities last week.

Then the cities of Asunción, Paraguay, and Rio-Niterói will make their presentations. The order of presentation will be decided by a draw to be held at the Executive Board meeting on October 9.

Both cities will have a total presentation time of 40 minutes, which will be supplemented by an additional 20 minutes for member countries to ask questions.

After the presentations by both cities and their delegations, the official vote will take place.

The technology company in charge of the voting will be Lumi Global, the same company used by the International Olympic Committee for its elections.

A total of 53 votes will determine the winner. The votes are divided into 41 votes, one for each member country, and, according to the organization’s Constitution, 12 countries have one additional vote for having hosted the Pan American Games.

These are: the United States, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Chile, Brazil, and Argentina.

The city that obtains 27 votes or more in the election will be the host of the 2031 Pan American Games.
