Sprints reached speeds of up to 60 kilometers per hour at the Peñalolen Velodrome.
More than 20 countries had to test their coordination, strategy and endurance in delivering all the sprints necessary to fight for gold and secure a ranking on the road to the Paris 2024 Olympics.
On Tuesday, track cycling began at the Peñalolen Velodrome, where Canada and Mexico emerged as the fastest teams in the team sprint competition, which involves three riders completing three laps as quickly as possible.
With a time of 43.396, the Canadian team won the gold medal final, just ahead of the Colombian team, who finished in 43.421.
“This competition is definitely the most special and significant one we’ve participated in,” commented Tyler Rorke, a member of the winning team, who competed alongside James Hedgcock and Nicholas John.
Colombia’s team, consisting of Carlos Echeverri, Kevin Quintero, the reigning world champion in track cycling after his victory in Glasgow, and Ruben Murillo, fell just short of the gold medal.
“Truth is, we did a great job. It’s just a bit bitter not to win the gold, but God’s plans are perfect, so there’s nothing we can do about that. The competition is very high; we’ve worked too hard for what we did today and we know we can do better,” explained Murillo.
Canada led the rankings with a time of 43.829 seconds, allowing them to advance to the gold medal match against Colombia, with Mexico (44.569) and the United States (44.636) competing for the bronze.
In the women’s competition, Mexico also won the gold medal, beating the American and Canadian teams. Mexico’s team was composed of Luz Gaxiola, Jessica Salazar, and Yuli Verdugo, beating the United States team, which included Keely Ainslie, Kayla Hankins and Mandy Marquardt.
“This silver medal represents all the effort of the team and being able to take it back to the United States is an indescribable feeling for us,” expressed Marquardt.
