CUBA BEATS BRAZIL AND WINS GOLD IN MIXED DOUBLES TABLE TENNIS

By playing in the final, both teams qualified directly for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

On Monday, at the National Olympic Training Center in Santiago, the final of the mixed doubles table tennis category took place, with Cuba’s players Jorge Campos and Daniela Fonseca winning against the duo from Brazil of Victor Ishiy and Bruna Takahashi with a score of 4-0. Both pairs earned a direct spot in the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Throughout the match, which lasted 23 minutes, Cuba’s players displayed their dominance, showcasing accuracy in every point and securing their victory with scores of 11-8, 11-6, 11-7, 11-7.

These players had previously faced each other in September of this year in the semifinals of the 2023 ITTF Pan American Championship held in Cuba. On that occasion, the duo from Brazil secured a 3-0 victory, but they later lost the final to Chile.

“We made history. It’s the first gold medal in the Pan American Games since Indianapolis in 1987. It’s been 36 years since Cuba won a gold medal in table tennis, and I’m thrilled to make history in this field and to have secured the qualification for Paris in the morning,” said the champion Jorge Campos.

“For me, it’s a dream. These are my first Pan American Games, so to win a silver medal in my first event is a great honor. Playing alongside Bruna feels great. We’ve been working towards this for years, and we’ll strive to reach the Olympics in the best way possible,” added the runner-up Victor Ishiy.

The third-place and bronze medals in this category went to the countries of Chile and Canada, as there was no defined match for the third and fourth positions.
