He is one of the most renowned athletes in Cuba and a staple to Track & Field. Javier Sotomayor, specializing on the high jump, won 1 gold medal at the Olympic Games in Barcelona, a silver in Sydney 2000, 6 world titles (4 of them indoors) and still holds the world record of 2.45 meters.

During his successful athletic career, Javier Sotomayor has won 3 Pan American titles. The first one in Indianapolis 1987, after that in his very own country in La Havana 1991 and, to finish his continental conquest, in Mar del Plata 1995.
