This Friday, Saturday and Sunday the traditional sports festival will take place that brings together athletes from Latin America, Spain and Portugal. World and Olympic medalists will be part of this key event for our athletes’ intentions to qualify for the Olympic Games.

The city of Cuiaba in Brazil will host the 2024 Ibero-American Athletics Championships from May 10 to 12, thus becoming the fourth Brazilian city to welcome Ibero-American athletes after Manaus 1990, Sao Paulo 2014 and Rio 2016.

In a 3-day competition, the best Latin American, Spanish and Portuguese athletes will try to score points for the Olympic ranking, and others will qualify directly by achieving the minimum marks requested for the event in Paris.

Argentina will participate in this event with 21 athletes, among which Carlos Augusto Johnson stands out in the 3,000 meters with obstacles, Tomás Mondino in 200 and 4×100 meters and Carolina Lozano in 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000 meters.

Colombia, for its part, will be present in Brazil with 67 athletes (35 women and 32 men), with its top figures being the world javelin medalist, Flor Denis Ruíz, and the 400-meter Olympic medalist Anthony Zambrano. Along with them, Arnovis Dalmero (long jump), Carlos Sanmartín (3,000m with obstacles), Natalia Linares (long jump), among others.

Cuba, meanwhile, will only participate in the Ibero-American event with 6 athletes. These are the long jumpers Alejandro Parada and Maikel Vidal and the triple jumper Andy Hechavarría and the discus throw specialists Silinda Morales and Mario Díaz, the hammer thrower Ronald Mencía.

Team Chile will participate with 36 athletes. Its top figures will be the sprinters called “Chilean Pumas”, who after their participation in the world relay will go in search of tickets to France in Cuiaba. Along with them, the Santiago 2023 Pan American Decathlon champion, Santiago Ford, the gold medalist in the Lima 2019 Hammer Throw, Gabriel Kehr, and the Bullet throwers Ivanna Gallardo and Natalia Ducó, among others.

Spain, for its part, will present Team B for the Ibero-American event. In total there will be 30 athletes, including Daniela Fra (400m hurdles), Una Stancev (high jump), Arantza Moreno (javelin throw), Miguel Baidal (10 km route), Ilias Fifa (10,000m), Aleix Pi (jump with polecha), Diego Casas (discus throw) and Nicolás Quijera (javelin throw)

It should be noted that in the historical medal table of these Ibero-American Games, the absolute leader is Brazil with 551 medals and 194 golds, followed by Cuba with 403 medals and 129 golds and in third place is Spain with 329 medals and 176 golds).
