SAGEN MADDALENA OF TEAM USA WINS GOLD WITH PAN AMERICAN RECORD IN SHOOTING SPORT
Sagen Maddelena won the gold medal with a Pan American Games record of 249.5, in the 10 meter air rifle final.
Although Team USA’s Sagen Maddalena climbed to the top of the podium with a new Par American Games record in the 10m air rifle shooting sport event, Argentina’s silver medalist Fernanda Russo received the first Olympic berth at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. This is because the United States already has two athletes classified in the same category from previous events.
Maddalena finished in first place with 249.5 points. In the midst of a dead silence at the Lo Aguirre range, in Pudahuel, Maddalena took advantage in the 20 shots by scoring 249.5 against 248.0 for her Argentine rival, securing both the gold and the new Games record.
The second place for Argentina’s Fernanda Russo earned her the silver medal and also a qualification for the Olympic Games. The bronze went to another representative from US, Mary Tucker, with a score of 226.3. Tucker is one of the two athletes from the U.S. who had already qualified for the Olympics.
Maddalena’s score of 249.5 in this final surpasses the Pan American record of 249.4 set by her compatriot Alison Weisz at the previous Pan American Games in Lima 2019, where Weisz finished fourth in the final today. The world record is held by the Chinese shooter Jiayu Han (254), set in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, on May 12th.
