The top wrestlers of the Americas are ready to compete at the 2023 World Wrestling Championships being held in Belgrade, Serbia from September 16 to 24.

The world’s top wrestling tournament is ready to begin this weekend in Serbia with the best wrestlers in the Americas and the world set to battle not only for medals, but also qualification to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

A total of 90 quotas are available to the athletes competing in the 2023 World Wrestling Championships that will be held from September 16-24. The top 5 wrestlers in each weight class and discipline will earn qualification to next year’s Olympic Games.

Wrestlers of the Americas who do not earn their qualification at the World Championships will have two more opportunities to do so next year, first at the Pan American Qualifying Tournament that will be held from March 15-17 in Acapulco, Mexico and then at the World Qualifying Tournament from May 9-12 in Istanbul, Turkey. The continental qualifier will offer quotas to the top 2 athletes in each discipline while the global qualifier will determine the final three athletes who will compete at Paris 2024.

The athletes of the United States are once again the favorites to lead the medal table at the 2023 World Championships following their victory at the event in 2022. The U.S. team will be led by defending champions Kyle Snyder (97kg), David Taylor (86kg) and Kyle Dake (74kg) on the men’s side, while Helen Maroulis (57kg) and Adeline Gray (76kg) will seek to win their fourth and sixth world titles on the women’s side, respectively.

Canada was the only other country of the Americas to earn a medal at last year’s world championships thanks to two bronzes from Karla Godinez (55kg) and Linda Morais (68kg). Their 2023 team features Lima 2019 Pan American Games Champion Justina Di Stasio (76kg), Ana Godinez (55kg) and Lachlan McNeil (men’s 65kg).

After failing to medal at the 2022 World Championships, Cuba will seek to regain a place in the medal standings with its strong Greco-Roman team. Although the greatest wrestler in history Mijain Lopez will only participate as a spectator in Serbia as he prepares to return to competition at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, the team will be led by Tokyo 2020 Olympic Champion Luis Orta (67kg) and multi-medalist at the world championships Oscar Pino (130kg).

Athletes from the countries of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Jamaica, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela will also compete in the championships.

Competition begins on September 16 with the qualification and semifinals for the men’s freestyle weight classes of 61, 70, 86 and 125kg, with the finals of those events taking place on September 17. The women’s freestyle events begin on September 18 followed by the finals for the men’s freestyle divisions of 79, 92, 57 and 74kg.

The final men’s freestyle finals will be held on September 19 for the weight classes of 65 and 97kg, as well as the women’s freestyle finals in 55 and 59kg. September 20 is purely women’s freestyle events, with the last women’s freestyle finals taking place on September 21 alongside the start of the men’s Greco-Roman events. All of the finals for the Greco-Roman discipline will be held from September 22-24 to signal the conclusion of the World Championships.
