TEAM USA AND TEAM CANADA ON THE MEDAL TABLE AT THE END OF THE FOURTH DAY OF COMPETITION

Four days into the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Games, the United States ranks fifth in the overall medal count and Canada ranks 17th. Norway leads the overall standings, followed by Switzerland and Japan.

The action in Milan and northern Italy continues unabated. The Winter Olympics are entering their fifth day of competition, and so far only the United States and Canada, as expected, have won medals.

However, this is still well below expectations for these major powers.

Team USA is in fifth place in the overall medal count with two medals won on Sunday, in figure skating in the team event and in the women’s downhill with Breezy Johnson.

Canada, meanwhile, is in 17th place, with two bronze medals so far: Valerie Maltais in the 3000 meters in long track speed skating and Megan Oldham in freestyle skiing slopestyle.

The overall leader so far is Norway with three gold, one silver, and two bronze medals. Switzerland follows with 3-1-1, and Japan is third with 2 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze medals.

Norway’s lead is not surprising, as this country has topped the overall standings in the last two Olympic Games in Beijing 2022 and Pyeongchang 2018.

The United States has finished in fourth place in the last two editions with nine and eight medals respectively, while Canada finished eleventh in Beijing and third in a surprising performance in South Korea.

Both countries want to improve on their recent performances, which is why they have put together strong teams to compete in these games.

In the other countries on the continent, Haiti’s Stevenson Savart has already seen action in cross-country skiing, where he finished 64th; Chile’s Matilde Schwenke finished 27th in downhill and Sebastián Endrestad finished 72nd in skiathlon; Argentine Mateo Sauma finished 67th and Franco de la Parra 61st in cross-country skiing, Nicole Begue finished 30th in downhill skiing, and Verónica Ravenna is still competing in luge.
