TWO WORLD RECORDS THAT MAKE THE CONTINENT PROUD

Alison Dos Santos of Brazil and Masai Russell became the hurdling heroes of the Zurich Diamond League by setting new world records. The Brazilian clocked a spectacular time of 45.80 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles, while the American clocked 12.09 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles.

The world of track and field is celebrating. Today goes down in history as the day two world records were broken in the 100- and 400-meter hurdles at the Zurich Diamond League.

The first to achieve glory in Switzerland was Brazil’s Alison Dos Santos. In a spectacular race, the world and Olympic medalist took first place in the competition, coming in at 45.80 seconds, beating the world record of 45.94 seconds set by Norway’s Karsten Warholm in 2021.

Dos Santos shaved 14 hundredths of a second off Walholm’s five-year-old record to become the fastest man in the history of the 400-meter hurdles.

“The energy from the crowd was perfect. It’s incredible to set this record. I dedicate it to all track and field fans,” said an emotional Alison Dos Santos after being crowned the King of Zurich.

In the 100-meter hurdles, the world record was also broken. Masai Russell of the United States took first place with an outstanding time of 12.09 seconds, improving by just three hundredths of a second on the record set by Tobi Amusan of Nigeria in Eugene in 2022.

“I’ve been saying all year that I was going to break the world record. I didn’t know when it would happen, but I was getting closer and closer. I don’t chase records; I chase victories, and with victories come fast times,” said the new record-holder.

Following this event in Zurich, the Diamond League will make its final stop at the Grand Final in Brussels, Belgium, on September 4 and 5. It will be an opportunity to see who will take home the Grand Diamond—and who knows—perhaps witness even more world records.
