In her career, the athlete has received several awards, including a bronze medal at the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games, gold at the 2023 Open Costa Rica and bronze at the 2023 Dakar World Taekwondo Grand Prix Challenge.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Aliyah Shipman, along with her partner Ava Soon Lee, secured Haiti’s first medals in 16 years at the Pan American Games, entering the medal standings at Santiago 2023. Haiti had not won a taekwondo medal in 20 years.<\/span><\/p>\n

After a tough battle, Shipman defeated Gloria Mosquera from Colombia in the semifinals of the women’s +67 kg Kyorugi, earning Haiti’s first bronze medal in these Pan American Games.<\/span><\/p>\n

“When I won my bronze medal, I was very excited. In fact, I let out a big scream because I felt that all my hard work had paid off,” the athlete said after her victory.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her teammate Ava Soon Lee faced Mexico’s Leslie Soltero in the final of the women’s -67 kg Kyorugi, winning the silver medal. This was Haiti’s first medal in the sport.<\/span><\/p>\n

Regarding the two medals for her country, Shipman expressed, “I had the honor of winning one of the first medals along with my teammate at the Pan American Games since 2007. When I heard that number, I thought, ‘Wow, it’s been a long time.’ I feel that Haiti deserves to be in the spotlight in sports because we have such talented athletes, but not all of them have the opportunity to practice.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The bronze medalist also mentioned the difficulties she faced during the fight due to an injury. “My preparation for Santiago was not the typical one compared to other taekwondo athletes. I’ve been dealing with injuries this year, so I haven’t attended many training camps or competitions. I’ve just been strengthening and working hard in the gym.”<\/span><\/p>\n

She also spoke about the challenges of being an athlete in Haiti due to the lack of recognition for athletes in her country. “I feel it deserves more representation; it’s a great country with great people. There are so many great athletes in the country, but they don’t have the opportunity to show it because they lack resources. That’s why I feel very grateful to be able to contribute in any way I can to make it easier for the athletes.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“One of the most important things I try to do in sports is to bring more funding and attention to Haiti so that we can be recognized and the little kids at home watching us on TV can be inspired and we can create an organization that provides proper sports training to reach an international level,” the medalist said about her role as a representative of Haiti.<\/span><\/p>\n

This was Shipman’s first time on a podium, making it a moving experience for her. “It means a lot to me because it shows that all the hard work I do is worth it. That feeling excited me a lot and seeing Haiti’s flag raised moved me. All the hard work my coach and I have been doing has come true.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Her long-term goal is to qualify for the Olympics in Paris in 2024, and she has stated that she will attend training camps, compete in tournaments, and work very hard with her coach to achieve this.<\/span><\/p>\n
