The two-time Olympic diving medalist is embracing her new role as president of the Mexican Athletes’ Commission with great responsibility and motivation. In this exclusive interview with Panam Sports, she tells us, among other things, what her days have been like since retiring and her goals for taking on this new challenge.<\/strong><\/p>\n

After the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, where she placed eighth in the 10-meter platform, the outstanding Mexican diver, Alejandra Orozco, decided to step aside and hang up her swimsuit for good.<\/p>\n

She had a successful 20-year career, which included participating in four Olympic Games and winning two medals: silver in London 2012 (in the 10m synchronized event with Paola Espinoza) and bronze in Tokyo 2020 (in the same event, but with Gabriela Ag\u00fandez).<\/p>\n

Since retiring, Alejandra has spent time with her husband and has given countless motivational talks about her experiences and successes in sport, which have made her one of the most outstanding athletes in Mexican history.<\/p>\n

After participating in the Panam Sports Athletes Forum in the Dominican Republic in November 2024, she was excited to lead the Mexican Athletes Commission and share all her experience so that the voice of her country’s athletes could be heard loud and clear across the continent and around the world.<\/p>\n

That is how, in 2025, she took office as President of the Commission, from where she wants to help all athletes in her country.<\/p>\n

From Madrid, Spain, where she is participating in a visit as an ambassador for a Mexican company, she spoke with Panam Sports about how she has managed her retirement and this new challenge in her life leading Mexico’s athletes.<\/p>\n

How have these months been since retiring from high-level competition?<\/strong>
\nThese months of retirement have been very interesting because I’ve had the chance to discover different aspects of Ale, the world of sports, and different angles associated with sports. I am clear that I want to give back to sport everything it has given me in life. To be honest, it changed my life and I have had the opportunity to pass on many tools that worked for me during my career. So it has been a rollercoaster of experiences, where many doors and opportunities have opened up where I have been able to contribute, and in a way I am experiencing sport from a different angle and enjoying it very much.<\/p>\n

We have seen you give many motivational talks. Do you enjoy that aspect?<\/strong>
\nYes, motivational talks and conferences are an area, an angle that I am really enjoying. Sport gave me the opportunity, it gave me the privilege of now being on a new platform, sharing everything I have experienced. I really like being able to connect with different areas, with different people, stories. I’ve been giving talks to children, young people, adults, many women, but also to engineers, athletes, students, doctors… I think it’s an honor to be able to convey my experiences and my story, and now that I’m in different settings, I also learn a lot from the audience that is there and participates in my talks.<\/p>\n

Do you miss competitions and training?<\/strong>
\nThe truth is, yes, but I miss my teammates more, being with Gaby or my teammates 24\/7. I miss that routine, that space where I spent 20 years and knew every day, every type of training, every movement perfectly, and I think that’s what I miss, the camaraderie, what made me laugh every day. Sometimes I would arrive happy, other times sad, but you always had that company or those stories, anecdotes that end up marking your life. But I look back, and I think I was ready to move on to another phase of my life.<\/p>\n

What do you think has been the great legacy that \u201cAle Orozco\u201d left to Mexican sports?<\/strong>
\nI think the legacy that Ale left in Mexican sports is this story of resilience, of being able to show that everyone has their own path, their own formula for achieving their goals. Because her story was the opposite of a normal athletic career. She started as a young girl and broke that limit or barrier that a young athlete could be in the elite. Then she stayed there for many years, won medals, was happy… If I had to sum it up in one word for me, it would be the resilience she showed at all stages of her journey, both in childhood and adolescence and in maturity throughout her sporting career.<\/p>\n

Today you have a new challenge in your life as president of the Mexican Athletes’ Commission…
\n<\/strong>That’s right, today I’m embarking on a new mission as president of the Mexican Athletes’ Commission, a position I’ve held since 2025. I believe it’s a significant commitment and responsibility, one I embrace with the same dedication I showed when I first stepped onto the podium, striving to bring glory to Mexico and represent my country to the best of my ability. With this new challenge, in addition to all the institutional aspects, I want to contribute to the holistic development of all athletes, focusing on their growth as individuals and providing them with tools that can support their entire athletic journey, including their post-career years.<\/p>\n

What are your main objectives with the Athletes’ Commission?<\/strong>
\nThe Commission’s objective is to strengthen the holistic development of athletes\u2014that aspect that is sometimes overlooked, not given enough consideration, or even something we ourselves, while actively competing, don’t prioritize. It’s about providing them with more resources throughout their athletic careers, from the beginning, through development, when they reach the elite level, and even during retirement. That they can be prepared along the way, so that when situations arise, they know how to face them. I think we should also focus on retirement, mental health, and several other important issues that we need to strengthen in Mexico. But we also need to raise awareness about the work of the Commission and how these information tools from the Olympic movement can help us both within the training area and outside of sports.<\/p>\n

What message would you give to Mexican athletes regarding this Commission?<\/strong>
\nThe message I give them is that today, we have so much information and so many tools, opportunities, and possibilities to explore areas and balance many facets of our lives, that we can be more well-rounded athletes. Not only be very good at our sport, but also be able to strengthen our academic and professional lives, and foster closer institutional relationships. We can work as a team and we can strengthen ourselves with knowledge. They can truly acquire many tools throughout their sporting journey and will use them in different spaces, but everything they experience and all the experiences they have will always work for them, they will always learn and will always be part of their story.<\/p>\n

Some countries don’t have an Athletes’ Commission, or if they do, they’re somewhat passive. What advice would you give them?<\/strong>
\nIn the Olympic Movement, Athletes’ Commissions haven’t been around for very long. Previously, the human aspect of the athlete, their vulnerability, wasn’t given much consideration. Nor was there much in-depth analysis of the processes before, during, and after competition. I think that today, we have the opportunity to talk amongst ourselves, with other countries, to connect, and that would be my recommendation. To be more active, or to not be afraid of this movement, it’s important to fully understand where it comes from and what its function is. We need to have that feedback from the athletes, and the commission can provide a space for improvement, for listening, and for future progress. Today, the athlete is at the heart of the movement, at the heart of sport, and I believe that listening to their opinions, proposals, and ideas can make all the difference. In these times, having an Athletes’ Commission is very important for National Olympic Committees and for individual countries.<\/p>\n
