The Venezuelan Olympic Committee’s Women in Sports Commission held another medical and sports activity day at its facilities to celebrate International Women’s Health Action Day.

The commission, chaired by Sensei Katiuska Santaella, organized the event—as is customary every May 28—which featured specialists who conducted anthropometric measurements, diabetes and hypertension screenings, as well as body mass index and body fat measurements.

In addition to the health screenings, two spinning classes were held with a large group of athletes, officials, and COV staff, serving as motivation and an example of how aerobic exercise helps improve quality of life.

“The Venezuelan Olympic Committee supports International Women’s Health Action Day. Today, our female staff members, our federation representatives, and our athletes are here enjoying a spinning class that will be rewarding for them,” said COV President María Soto at the end of the cycling class, alongside those present.

Sensei Katiuska Santaella also acknowledged the importance of increasingly highlighting this day as part of an awareness campaign.

“We are a commission that brings together men and women, athletes and leaders to celebrate this great day,” she said. “We always need medical support, which is why they come to get their health checked and engage in physical activity. We appreciate your attendance and that together we can make this a better day.”

As for the guest specialists, the event featured Juliette Medrano, a doctor on the ODEBO medical commission; Tamilia Peña, medical director of the COV; and doctors from Grupo Nueve Once, one of the COV’s partners in primary healthcare.

“We celebrate this very special day and appreciate the effort made to maintain women’s health, which is often neglected due to a lack of time and the demands of work and family. But we must take care of ourselves because that is more important,” stated Dr. Medrano.

Dr. Peña spoke about the neglect that exists among those directly involved in athletes’ well-being.

“We have noticed that in our population there are women with high rates of obesity and high blood pressure. With the data obtained from each of them, we can provide recommendations to our participants regarding exercise and nutrition. We look out for our athletes, but we must also look out for our own health,” she stated in a tone that should serve as a wake-up call for the national sports community.

To close out the day, attendees enjoyed refreshments and a final gathering where they shared their experiences and committed to putting what they had learned into practice.
