ASUNCION 2022 SOUTH AMERICAN GAMES WILL FEATURE 18 QUALIFYING SPORTS FOR SANTIAGO 2023

The event will be held from October 1 to 15 in Paraguay’s capital. A total of 4,698 athletes from 15 countries are expected to compete in 34 sports and 53 disciplines. All of the qualifiers to Santiago 2023 and more will be streamed live on the Panam Sports Channel.

Asuncion, Paraguay has entered the final stretch before hosting the largest multisport event in the country’s history.

The South American Games are just eight days away from the Opening Ceremony and the athletes and delegations are already preparing for the experience which will not only have medals as a prize, but also qualification to the continent’s most important sporting event — the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.

The following disciplines will serve as qualifiers to the continental Games that will be held between October 20 and November 5 in the Chilean capital.

Archery, aquatic sports (artistic swimming, diving, open water swimming, swimming and water polo), athletics, boxing, bowling, cycling (track, mountain bike, BMX race and BMX freestyle), equestrian (dressage and jumping), field hockey, handball, karate, speed skating, rugby, shooting sport, squash, table tennis, tennis, triathlon and water skiing (wakeboard).

As a result, some of the world’s greatest athletes are expected to compete for a spot at the Pan American Games in Santiago next year. Already confirmed among them are Las Leonas of Argentina — the Olympic and world championship medalists in field hockey — and the best handball teams of the participating countries.

Santiago 2023 Pan American Games Qualification Process

Archery:
Gold medalists in the men’s and women’s individual recurve and compound events will earn their country a spot at Santiago 2023.

Aquatic sports:
Artistic Swimming – The top 2 female Duets will qualify along with the Chilean team (local); the top 4 Teams will qualify along with the Chilean team (as hosts of the Pan Am Games).
Diving – To Be Determined
Open water swimming – The top 7 athletes and the Chilean team qualify.
Swimming – Qualification standards established by Panam Aquatics, Panam Sports and the Local Organizing Committee.
Water polo – The gold and silver medalists and the Chilean team qualify.

Athletics:
Gold medalists in all men’s and women’s events will qualify in accordance with the World Athletics Competition Regulations. Athletes in individual events will receive direct qualification while relay race winners will earn qualification for their country.

Boxing:
The gold and silver medalists in each weight class earn direct qualification for the athlete to Santiago 2023.

Bowling:
The top 3 men’s and women’s countries will qualify based on the total number of pins knocked down in the 24 games by their two athletes in each gender.

Cycling:
Mountain Bike & Track Cycling – The gold medalists in each event qualify their country to the Pan Am Games. If that country has already qualified, the next highest finisher will earn qualification for their country.
BMX – Both the race and freestyle disciplines will receive points towards the UCI World Ranking that determines the qualifiers to Santiago 2023.

Equestrian:
Jumping – In jumping, 3 teams and 4 individuals will qualify. The places obtained are for the country.
Dressage – In dressage, 2 teams and 3 individuals will qualify. The places obtained are for the country.

Field Hockey:
The top 2 countries in the men’s and women’s tournaments directly qualify to Santiago 2023. If there are less than four participants, an additional country will qualify according to the final results of the VI Pan American Cup 2022.

Handball:
The top 2 countries in the men’s and women’s tournaments will qualify. The countries that finish in third place will have the right to participate in the playoff organized by the Confederation of South and Central American Handball (COSCABAL) or, failing that, the International Handball Federation (IHF).

Karate:
The top 2 countries in each category directly qualify their country to Santiago 2023. If the any of the top 2 are already qualified, qualification goes to the next highest finisher. The countries of Panama, Venezuela and Colombia will seek separate qualification as established by the Pan American Karate Federation.

Rugby:
The top 2 teams in the men’s and women’s tournaments will earn qualification for their country.

Speed Skating:
Skaters will earn qualification for their country. Santiago 2023 will be allocated 4 qualifiers as follows: 2 in sprint and 2 in distance events, with 1 male and 1 female in each.

Shooting Sport:
There will be a total of 8 men’s qualifiers and 9 women’s qualifiers guaranteeing qualification in each of the events.

Squash:
The top 2 countries in the men’s and women’s Team event will earn qualification for their country.

Table tennis:
The gold medalists in the men’s and women’s Team event will earn qualification for their country.

Tennis:
The gold and silver medalists in the men’s and women’s singles tournaments earn direct qualification to Santiago 2023.

Triathlon:
The gold medalists in the mixed relay event earn qualification for their country.

Water skiing (Wakeboard):
The gold medalists in the men’s and women’s events earn qualification for their country.

The South American Games will take place between October 1 and 15 with athletes from 15 countries participating, including: Argentina, Aruba, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Curacao, Ecuador, Guyana, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela.
