HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE PANAM SPORTS PRESIDENT

Dear Pan American Family,

The year of 2020 will be remembered as forever changing the world. Covid-19 hit everyone hard, killed millions of people and gave the world’s economy a major setback.

Sport was not exempt from these problems. The suspension of all competitions, especially the Tokyo Olympics, deeply affected all of us who share this passion for sport.

However, despite everything that has happened, Panam Sports continued with its unrestricted support to the National Olympic Committees with the aim of not leaving athletes adrift for even one second during this difficult situation that the world was experiencing.

The commitment of Colombia and its Government led by President Ivan Duque, the Valle del Cauca Government and the Mayor’s Office of Santiago de Cali, who confirmed their support for the first Cali-Valle 2021 Junior Pan American Games, has been admirable. They gave their their full support and the necessary resources to the Organizing Committee, who have not rested in their important work of organizing what will be an unforgettable festival for more than 3,500 young people from our continent.

I also want to highlight the important work and commitment of Chile, with its President Sebastian Piñera, who, like Colombia, are committed to sport and are working hard to organize the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, the first in history on Chilean soil.

Cali Valle 2021 and Santiago 2023 are events of the Pan American Family that together you all form, and together we must show the whole world our passion and our ability to have world-class Games.

There is still a very great uncertainty about what will happen with Covid-19. Although they are beginning to distribute vaccines in many countries, infections have been increasing, which leads us to become more aware and concerned about self-care, so that once and for all we can get out of this pandemic.

The Tokyo Olympics are coming this year, and we hope that everything will be back to normal by then. I am aware that both the IOC and the Japanese authorities are making all the necessary efforts to make this worldwide sports festival unforgettable and take place without any inconvenience. But I insist, it will take all of us working together to escape this pandemic. A vaccine requires everyone’s cooperation, and that is where self-protection is essential.

I do not want to end my message without first wishing a prosperous 2021 to all of you, your families, and of course, for your Olympic Committees and all of our dear athletes. Here’s to hoping that this new year will be filled with hope, health, well-being and a lot of sport for everyone.

A warm hug to all of you.
