Panam Sports adds another talented professional to its growing team, hiring Mario Cilenti as the Director of Major Events. With 23 years of experience helping Organizing Committees deliver the Games they envisioned, his first priority is ensuring that the Lima 2019 Pan American Games are a resounding success.

Beginning his career in the Olympic Movement as volunteer at the 1995 Pan American Games in Mar del Plata, Argentina, Mario Cilenti has always had a passion for sport and its ability to improve the world.

Since that introduction to the sports world as a volunteer, Cilenti has been involved with each edition of the Pan Am Games and was also instrumental in the delivery of South America’s first Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

“I started off as a volunteer for the 1995 Pan Am Games in my hometown – Mar del Plata. That experience literally changed my life and has driven the professional career I have today. It has taken me around the world in working with Organizing Committees, NOCs, Bids and now with the Continental Governing Body of Panam Sports,” Cilenti says.

Recognizing his wealth of experience with Organizing Committees, Panam Sports hired Cilenti to help the Lima 2019 Organizing Committee and hosts of future events reach their full potential. Cilenti was eager for the opportunity and believes he is a good fit for the organization.

“After having worked for six Organizing Committees of different events including the Pan Am Games, Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games and having participated in all Pan Am Games since 1995, I felt that I could be of assistance to Panam Sports in ensuring that our Games products are indeed up to the standard that what we want organizers to deliver on our behalf,” he says.

Panam Sports believes that Cilenti’s numerous roles within Organizing Committees over the past 20 years will allow the organization to provide creative solutions and insight to organizers that are preparing to deliver the continental association’s core events.

After a little more than a month since joining the Panam Sports team, Cilenti has already traveled to Peru twice to meet with the Lima 2019 Organizing Committee (COPAL) and says his first priority is establishing a regular connection with organizers to ensure all of their goals are met.

“Allowing for continuity and regular visits for extensive periods will facilitate quick decision making on both sides.” he says. “I want to feel part of the team delivering these Games.

“My priority is to ensure Lima 2019 can deliver on their commitments, ensuring the adequate services levels to our key constituents, the NOCs and the athletes, so that Lima can be the largest and best Pan American Games in history.”

But Cilenti is not alone in this new task. Panam Sports has also added the services of the South American Sports Organization (ODESUR) Technical Director Fabio Ramirez. Together, Cilenti and Ramirez will work to ensure the success of Lima 2019 and all future events.

“Panam Sports has to maximize its potential as a continental sports governing body as well as position itself as a sports brand throughout the Americas. There are a number of different events which Panam Sports is developing that will provide Athletes from our continent further opportunities for growth and participation, all contributing to additional possibilities for them to reach their Olympic goals.”
