PANAM SPORTS DEFINES SPORT PROGRAM FOR FIRST JUNIOR PAN AMERICAN GAMES OF CALI 2021
A total of 30 sports and 45 disciplines will be held at this historic event. All gold medalists in individual sports will automatically qualify for the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. Additionally, the gold medalists in the majority of the Team Sports will obtain a quota for their respective countries to the Games in Chile.
The Cali 2021 Junior Pan American Games will take place between June 5 and 20, with all 41 Panam Sports member nations and more than 4,000 athletes expected to participate.
The first edition of the Junior Pan American Games is beginning to gain steam throughout the continent. After a year of hard work by the Organizing Committee since its election a as the Host City a year ago, the sports that will be presented at this continental event are ready to be announced.
At the Panam Sports Executive Committee meeting in Puerto Rico last week which was preceded by a meeting of the Sports Development Commission, the official program of the Junior Games that will take place in June 2021 was defined.
The sports that were included in this historic event are the following: Aquatics (Diving, Swimming, Open Water Swimming and Artistic Swimming), Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Baseball (Men) and Softball (Women), Basketball (5×5, 3×3), Bowling, Boxing, Canoe (Sprint), Cycling (BMX, BMX Freestyle, Road, Track and Mountain Bike), Fencing, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Karate (Kumite), Modern Pentathlon, Roller Sports (Artistic, Speed and Skateboarding), Rowing, Rugby, Sailing, Shooting (Pistol, Rifle), Squash, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Triathlon, Volleyball (Indoor and Beach), Weightlifting, and Wrestling (Freestyle and Greco-Roman).
The ages for each specific sport will be determined and announced in the coming weeks, but the ages for all sports will fall below 23-years-old and will vary according to each discipline.
It is important to note that these Games were created by Panam Sports to promote and motivate that generation of athletes that often do not have competitions between the Youth Olympic Games and the elite adult international competitions, whether due to lack of development opportunities, more experienced and older athletes ahead of them, or for leaving sport to devote all of their time to their university studies.
“This will be an important boost to sports development in the region. We want it to be a festival, we want our athletes to advance and stay motivated with these Junior Pan American Games. With this goal, we have determined that the winner of the gold medal of each discipline will automatically qualify to the 2023 Pan American Games,” said Panam Sports President, Neven Ilic.
Each gold medalist from the individual sports will secure a direct ticket to the Games in Chile in 2023, while the gold medalists in the majority of Team Sports will earn a quota for their respective nation to compete in Santiago.
The first Junior Pan American Games of Cali 2021, which will feature more than 4,000 participating athletes from across the continent, will take place between June 5 and 20, 2021.
