SANTIAGO, CHILE (September 7, 2023) — The next Pan American Games will be key to defining the future of the Panam Sports Athlete Commission.
Of the eight current members, three will be leaving the Commission as the statutes indicate. After four years leading the Athlete Commission as its President and being a member of the Panam Sports Executive Committee, Aliann Pompey of Guyana leaves office along with the former judoka from Puerto Rico, Carlos Santiago, and the current rowing athlete from El Salvador, Adriana Escobar.
In their replacement, four new members of the AC will be elected who will join Amber Josep (BAR), Isabel Swan (BRA), Melissa Humana-Paredes (CAN), Paola Longoria (MEX) and Anthony Azevedo (USA) who are remaining on the Commission.
The election will take place during the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, with voting taking place between October 16 and November 4. More than 6,900 athletes who will compete at Santiago 2023 will be able to vote through a QR code that can be found on each of their accreditations.
The eight candidates who will be running the 4 new positions are:
Valentina Toro, Karate (Chile)
German Chiaraviglio, Athletics (Argentina)
Adriana Escobar, Rowing (El Salvador)
Pablo Aprahamian, Judo (Uruguay)
Melissa Mojica, Judo (Puerto Rico)
Danusia Francis-Reid, Artistic Gymnastics (Jamaica)
Karen Torrez, Swimming (Bolivia)
Chelsea Edghill, Table Tennis (Guyana)
“We have eight candidates from eight different countries that will be vying to be elected. I think we have a very balanced group of athletes that are willing to represent our region which I think is amazing,” says Athlete Commission President Aliann Pompey.
“I’m very proud of the work that we’ve done as a Commission over the last eight years with me being on the Commission and the last four as Chair of the Athlete Commission. I wish our candidates the best of luck. Obviously, Carlos, myself and Adriana will be here as a resource to make sure there is a smooth transition. But I think it’s exciting to have these eight new candidates up for election,” Aliann concluded.
The results of the election of the four new members will be announced following the conclusion of the Closing Ceremony of the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games through Panam Sports’ communications channels including: social media, Panam Sports Channel, press release and its website www.panamsports.org.
