THE BEST MOMENTS 2022 OF PAN AMERICAN SPORTS

After the suspension of countless events due to the pandemic that affected the entire world, 2022 came loaded with international competitions that undoubtedly left their mark. From the Olympic Games in Beijing to the World Cup in Qatar, here we review the most important milestones of this year that is beginning to say goodbye.

As every year, each season begins with the Dakar Rally, where this time, a Chilean and an American stood out the most in this demanding event, being crowned champions in their respective categories. Francisco López did it in Light Prototypes, while Austin Jones climbed to the top of the podium in SSV. The only two representatives of the Americas who achieved glory in the 2022 version.

In February, eyes were on Beijing, where the Winter Olympics were held. A total of 2,834 athletes from 91 countries participated in this white sport event that was won by Norway with 16 gold, 9 silver and 1 bronze and a total of 37 medals. Second was Germany (12-10-5), third, the People’s Republic of China (9-4-2) and fourth place, the United States (8-10-7). This edition featured Haiti’s historic debut in a winter Olympic event with Richardson Viano participating in alpine skiing. While Sarah Escobar from Ecuador, she also made history, being the first woman to represent her country in an Olympic event.

Among the most prominent Pan American figures were Nathan Chen and Chloe Kim from the United States, with a gold medal in Individual Figure Skating and 2nd consecutive gold in Halfpipe, respectively. In addition to the Mexican Donovan Carrillo, he stole the eyes not only of his country but of the whole world due to his great talent and sympathy that led him to achieve 22nd place.

In March, at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Belgrade, Yulimar Rojas gave Venezuela and all of America a new title and world record in the triple jump with a mark of 15.74 meters.

The first of the mega multi-sports events on the continent would arrive in April with the Rosario 2022 Junior South American Games. More than 2,500 athletes from 15 countries participated in this sport celebration that had a huge Sport Park as the epicenter of all the competitions. and that was key to the success of these Games. Brazil was left with the first position, then Colombia, and third place Argentina.

In May, in the Giro d’Italia, the Ecuadorian Olympic medalist, Richard Carapaz, achieved second place in the competition, after only being surpassed by Jai Hindley of Australia. In the third position was the Spanish Mikel Landa.

On June 29, our continent and especially CANOC, made history with the holding of the first 2022 Caribbean Games, a competition that had the participation of more than 800 u-23 athletes from 29 countries who lived a great sport event that was broadcast live on the Panam Sports Channel to the entire continent and the entire world. The winner of these Games was Cuba, followed by Puerto Rico and in third place was Trinidad and Tobago.

Beginning in July, the Field Hockey World Championship was held, where Las Leonas from Argentina reached the final of the tournament, winning the silver medal after losing  3-1t against Netherlands in the match for the title.

From July 15 to 24, the World Athletics Championships were held in Eugene Oregon, where our continent demonstrated its great supremacy worldwide. Some of the world champions who shone in this competition were: Kimberly García (Peru) in 20 and 35 km racewalk; Ryan Crouser (USA) Shot put; Yulimar Rojas (Venezuela) Triple Jump; Shericka Jackson (Jamaica) 200m; Grant Holloway (USA) 110m hurdles; Katie Nageotte (USA) Pole Vault; Alison Dos Santos (BRA) 400m hurdles; Sydney McLaughlin (USA) 400m hurdles; Athing Mu (USA) 800mts; Michael Norman (USA) 400mts; Anderosn Peters (Grenada) Javelin Throw; Shaunae Miller Uibo (Bahamas) 400mts, Chase Ealey (USA) Shot put; Brooke Andersen (USA) Hammer Throw; Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce (Jamaica) 100m; and Fred Kerly (USA) 100mts;

In September, the FIBA Cup 2022 was held in Recife, Brazil, which was won by Argentina, second place by the home owners and third place by the United States. The top figure of the MVP tournament was the Argentine Gabriel Deck, who had an average of 21.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists, with 64.9% shooting from the field, 40% from triples, 86.2% from the free throw line.

In October, Asunción del Paraguay organized the South American Games for the first time and the truth is that the success exceeded all expectations. Stadiums and venues full of people, a first-class sporting level and a city and a country committed to this event gave rise to an unforgettable experience. Asu2022, which had Brazil as leader absolute of the general classification, it was broadcast live with 6 daily signals through the Panam Sports Channel.

This month, the Gymnastics World Cup in Liverpool was also held, where the United States won the women’s team gold medal for the sixth consecutive time, while Olympic Champion Rebeca Andrade shone in individual competitions, taking first place in the All Around. and Arthur Mariano Nory bronze in high bar. In Canada, for her part, the one who took the applause was Ellie Black with her Silver medal in Beam and her contribution to the historical team bronze medal.

In India, the Under 17 Women’s World Cup was held from October 11 to 30, where Colombia had an outstanding performance by reaching the final. In the match for the title, they lost 0-1 against Spain, taking the silver medal.

And December finally said goodbye to the sports year with the long-awaited Soccer World Cup in Qatar 2022, where the Argentine National Team left the name of the American continent at the top by winning its third World Cup after defeating France in the grand final, which for many has been the most exciting ever.

After the Soccer World Cup, “Planet Sport” is preparing for what will be the 2023 season, which of course is marked by the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, the most important multi-sport event after the Olympic Games.

We are less than 300 days away from this Sports Celebration of the Americas and the more than 7,000 athletes are beginning to prepare to give their all in this event that promises to be historic and unforgettable.
