More than two thousand runners gathered at the Cerrillos Bicentennial Park — one of the primary venues of the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games — to participate in the fun run recognizing the 500-day countdown to Americas’ most important sporting event.

The call to action for citizens to participate in the Santiago 2023 5k Run was a success, bringing together 2,023 runners representing the year that the Pan American and Parapan American Games will take place. They gathered at Cerillos Bicentennial Park, the community that will be home to the Athlete Village and various sports events in just 16 more months.

The community fun run featured 14 disciplines including conventional and Paralympic groups and runners between 16 and 60 years old. It transformed into a family festival with community and sustainability workshops as well as a performance by the band Sonora de Tommy Rey.

“We are less than 500 days away from the start of our Pan American and Parapan American Games, we want it to be a great festival for our citizens and we invite all of our neighbors and all Chileans to be empowered by our Games and to participate in them and make them their own,” said Chilean Sports Minister and Santiago 2023 President, Alexandra Benado.

“All the athletes are going to stay here. We have seen how quickly the construction of the Pan American Village is advancing, so we embrace and receive this festival with great pride,” said Cerrillos Mayor Lorena Facuse, noting the valued role their community now has a sports leader.

Citizen involvement is one of the pillars of the sports celebration that the Chilean capital is preparing to welcome.

“We are happy to celebrate these 500 days to go. There is less and less time left to celebrate the largest sports festival in the Americas, and we are sure that together, it will be an excellent event,” said Santiago 2023 Executive Director Gianna Cunazza.

The Santiago 2023 Fun Run ended the week of the 500-day celebrations marking the countdown to the Pan American and Parapan American Games that will begin on October 20, 2023 and will bring together more than 9,000 athletes from 41 countries throughout the continent.
