Continental sports authorities visited the main sports venues in both cities and met with the Mayors of Rio de Janeiro and Niterói.
The great legacy of the 2016 Olympic Games in terms of infrastructure and the construction of the Pan American Village in downtown Rio de Janeiro stand out in Brazil’s bid to host the Pan American Games for the third time in history.
With just one week to go before the continent decides which city will host the 2031 Pan American Games, the Panam Sports Evaluation Commission successfully concluded its official visit to Rio de Janeiro and Niterói in Brazil.
In total, Panam Sports officials spent just over 48 hours meeting with key government and sports officials from both cities, including Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes and Niterói Mayor Rodrigo Neves.
In terms of visits to sports facilities, the Commission visited the COB Olympic Training Center and the Barra Olympic Park and its venues, such as the Rio Olympic Velodrome, Carioca 1 Arena, and the Olympic Arena, among other venues.
The visit also included tours of the Maracanã Stadium and the Maracanãzinho Gymnasium. The Commission also visited the Deodoro Olympic Park, where they had the opportunity to see the Canoe Slalom Stadium, the Olympic BMX Center, the Olympic Hockey Center, the Arena of the Future, the Deodoro Stadium (proposed venue for baseball and softball), the Olympic Shooting Center, and the Olympic Equestrian Center.
“We have the facilities ready, and we want to offer a legacy for all of the Americas. A legacy of technical cooperation, exchange of coaches, camps, and competitions. We are ready to host the Games because we don’t have to build practically anything. That gives us a lot of strength, and we want to do this for the entire continent,” said Marco La Porta, President of the Brazilian Olympic Committee.
Rio de Janeiro has a great infrastructure, which represents the true legacy of the 2016 Olympic Games. However, its proposal does include the construction of a modern Pan American Village in the city’s downtown.
“We are very happy to have Panam Sports here in Rio de Janeiro. We are very optimistic about the election. We believe that Rio-Niterói has everything it needs to organize high-quality Pan American and Parapan American Games,” said Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes.
The program also included visits to the main tourist attractions in the area, such as Sugarloaf Mountain and Copacabana Beach. The latter is planned to be the venue for the medal ceremony for athletes if the city wins the bid to host the 2031 Games.
“We are concluding a very important tour in this election process. We are leaving happy and proud of the great work that both cities are doing and their interesting proposals to host the continent’s largest sport event,” said Panam Sports Secretary General Jimena Saldaña.
It should be noted that if Brazil wins the election, the country would host the Pan American Games for the third time in history, having previously hosted the continental event in São Paulo in 1963 and Rio de Janeiro in 2007.
The important election of the host city for the XXI Pan American Games will take place on Friday, October 10, at 10 a.m., at the Extraordinary General Assembly in Santiago, Chile.
All the proceedings of this important Assembly will be broadcast live worldwide on the Panam Sports Channel.
