WORLD CHAMPIONS: USA SWEEPS ITS WAY TO GOLD AT THE 2026 GIRLS U17 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

The United States has a new title to its name: world champion. In its very first appearance at the FIVB Girls U17 World Championship, the U.S. Girls U17 National Team went undefeated through the entire tournament, capping a perfect run with a straight-sets victory over Türkiye, 3-0 (25-23, 25-11, 25-23), in Sunday’s gold medal match in Santiago, Chile.

It was as dominant a debut as international volleyball has seen. The U.S. finished the tournament 9-0, winning every single set — 27 for 27 — across nine matches, including two wins over the very team it beat for gold. In the final, the Americans out-hit Türkiye by 21 kills (45-24) and controlled the net and the service line, winning the blocking battle 11-8 and racking up nine aces to Türkiye’s four.

Opposite Kari Knotts was the engine of the championship match, putting down a match-high 17 kills to go with four aces and two blocks for 23 total points. Outside hitter Maya Ogbogu was right behind her with 17 points of her own — 14 kills, a block, and two aces — while also contributing five excellent receptions on defense.

An Undefeated Road to Gold

The U.S. announced its intentions from the opening whistle. The team opened pool play with a 3-0 win over Egypt on August 6, then rolled through Türkiye, host nation Chile, Thailand, and Czechia without dropping a single set — a 5-0 sweep of the preliminary round. The knockout stage brought no letup: a straight-sets win over Argentina in the Round of 16, a sweep of Italy in the quarterfinals, and a win over defending champion China in the semifinals to punch the U.S. ticket to the gold medal match.

That win over China carried extra weight — the Chinese squad had won the inaugural U17 World Championship in Lima in 2024, and the U.S. victory ended their bid for back-to-back titles.

A Historic First

This was only the second edition of the FIVB Girls U17 World Championship, and it marked the first time the United States had ever competed in the event. The tournament expanded significantly for its second year, growing from 16 teams in Lima 2024 to 24 teams across five confederations in Santiago — and it was also the first time Chile had hosted an FIVB volleyball world championship at any age or gender level.

For the U.S. program, gold in its debut appearance is a statement result, arriving in the same year the senior U.S. women’s national team continues to build on its recent international success. It’s an early signal of the young talent moving through the American volleyball pipeline — with Knotts, Ogbogu, and teammates like Julia Masselink, Peyton Smith, and Lexi Coleman posting big performances throughout the tournament — and a group to keep an eye on as many of these athletes progress toward the senior national team over the next several years.

Final Standings

  • 🥇 Gold: United States
  • 🥈 Silver: Türkiye
  • 🥉 Bronze: China

With the U.S. sweeping every set of the tournament, Santiago 2026 will be remembered as the moment American volleyball’s next generation announced itself on the world stage.
