From the Asuncion 2022 South American Games to the ATP title in Buenos Aires 2024, Facundo Díaz Acosta continues his ascension in the sport of tennis. He recently earned the first ATP title of his career and is positioning himself among the 60 best tennis players in the world.
“The truth is that I don’t know what to say. I haven’t come down yet”, a nervous and excited Facundo Diaz Acosta told Fernando Cicutti of TyC Sports after the spectacular victory over the Chilean Nicolas Jarry in the grand final of the ATP in Buenos Aires.
It was a dream match for the athlete known as “Facu”. Chile’s top-ranked Jarry arrived as the favorite following his victory over Carlos Alcaraz, but Diaz Acosta faced the challenge with great motivation and the incredible support of the Argentinean public at the Guillermo Vilas Central Court at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club.
Great tennis was played in the first set, with Facundo managing to break his rival’s serve before proceeding to move an erratic Jarry around the court with strategic shots, leading to a 6-3 victory in favor of Facundo.
Diaz Acosta continued his strong play in the second set, but Jarry improved upon his approach for a more competitive contest. However, it was not enough to change the result of the first set, with Facu winning 6-4 as the coronation of a dream week for the rising star. The victory gave Diaz Acosta his first ATP title of his career and also catapulted him up 28 places in the ATP Rankings, placing Facundo in 59th place for the top rank of his young career.
This success follows victories at both the Asuncion 2022 South American Games and Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, claiming golds at two of the continent’s largest multisport events to showcase his promising potential and talent.
“I’m a little shocked, especially when I see the champions of this tournament. I still haven’t come down yet, I’m processing everything, it still hasn’t hit me yet. Today I’m going to celebrate with the team and my family. Surely when all the adrenaline goes down I will start to come down and enjoy this a little more,” he said at the press conference after the final.
“It was an incredible week. I saw a lot of people every day. On top of that it was incredible because I played the best tennis of my life,” concluded Facundo before acknowledging that this victory has made him change his competition plans for the coming weeks and months.
The 23-year-old tennis player is beginning to refine his game, with his effort and hard work that over the past several years beginning to bear fruit and leading him to celebrate unprecedented success with his country and his people.
