Wrestlers of the Americas will have two more opportunities to prepare for the Paris 2024 Olympics that begin this July, first with the Pan American Wrestling Championship from February 21-24 followed by the Pan American Olympic Qualifier from February 28 to March 1, both of which are being held in Acapulco, Mexico.
Another continental championship is on the horizon with the Pan American Wrestling Championship beginning tomorrow, February 21 in Acapulco, Mexico. From February 21-24, the top wrestlers of the Americas will seek to add continental titles and medals to their impressive resumes.
Just four days later, the Pan American Olympic Qualifier will also be held in Acapulco. The three-day tournament will be held from February 28 to March 1 where a total of 36 athletes will earn their countries a ticket to compete at the Paris 2024 Olympics in August of this year.
The top two athletes in each division across men’s and women’s freestyle and men’s greco-roman whose countries have not yet qualified to the Games will earn berths for their respective countries. Wrestling is not a sport with direct qualification for athletes, as each NOC will select the wrestlers they will send to the Games depending on the amount of Olympic quotas their athletes earn across the qualification system.
The Olympic qualification for wrestling at Paris 2024 has taken place across three phases. Phase One consisted of the 2023 World Championships in Serbia, with the top five wrestlers from each weight class qualifying their country to compete at the Games. A total of 90 athletes secured Olympic qualification for their country at the 2023 World Championships.
Phase Two begins on February 28 for athletes of the Americas who are competing at the Continental Qualification Tournament. While 36 athletes of the Americas will deliver qualification to their countries at this tournament, a total of 144 athletes across the world will earn qualification at the respective continental qualifiers around the globe.
The final 54 Olympic quotas will be determined during Phase Three at the 2024 World Qualification Tournament to be held in Istanbul, Turkey from May 9-12, with all countries eligible to send athletes to compete for the final three Olympic berths in each weight class.
Top stars of the Americas and several medalists from the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games will be competing in one or both of the tournaments, including: Kyle Snyder (USA), Jacob Moran (PUR), Oscar Tigeros (COL), Alejandro Valdez (CUB), Kyle Dake (USA), Yurieski Torreblanca (CUB), Mason Parris (USA), Pedro Ceballos (VEN), Oscar Pino (CUB), Gabriel Rosillo (CUB), Kevin Mejia (HON), Yasmani Acosta (CHI), Yusneylis Guzman (CUB), Lucia Yepez (ECU), Giullia Penalber (BRA), Hannah Taylor (CAN), Forrest Molinari (USA), Kayla Miracle (USA), Adeline Gray (USA), Tatiana Renteria (COL), Olivia Di Bacco (CAN) and many, many more.
Panam Sports wishes nothing but success for all wrestlers of the Americas on their journey to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
