OLYMPIC AND PAN AMERICAN GAMES CHAMPIONS READY TO HIT THE POOL IN SANTIAGO

Among the most anticipated events at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games are aquatic sports, and perhaps none are more anticipated than swimming.

The endurance and speed of swimmers from across the continent will be tested in races ranging from 50 to 1,500 meters in 36 different events that will be held in the newly inaugurated Aquatics Center at Santiago 2023. Freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, combined and relays are the techniques that will be seen in the pool at the National Stadium sports park.

One of the founding sports of the Pan American Games has been dominated by the United States, which leads the historic medal table with 747 total. The U.S. once again led the medal table at Lima 2019 with 44 total medals, with Brazil and Canada also having outstanding performances with 30 and 15 medals, respectively.

THE FAVORITES

The favorite to shine in Santiago 2023 is Maggie Mac Neil. The Canadian is one of the most prominent athletes of Santiago 2023 and an Ambassador of Team Panam Sports who hopes to dominate her 50m and 100m butterfly events, in addition to the 4x100m freestyle, combined and mixed relays.

Among the favorite countries to win the 108 medals to be distributed is the United States delegation, counting among its ranks Olympic champion Brooks Curry who gold in Tokyo in the 4x100m freestyle relay, and medallists such as Erika Sullivan who took silver in the 1,500m freestyle, 4x200m relay silver medalist Paige Madden, and 4x100m freestyle relay bronze medalist Catherine De Loof.

However, the countries of North America aren’t the only ones seeking to dominate the sport. Brazil’s athletes who stood out four years ago seek to revalidate their medals. Time Brasil brings an incredible team of defending Pan American Games champions to the pool in Santiago, including Marcelo Chierighini (10om freestyle), Fernando Scheffer (200m freestyle), Guilherme Pereira Da Costa (1500m freestyle), Joao Gomes (100m breaststroke) and Leonardo Gomes de Deus (200m butterfly).
